Short answer. A product page on bol is shared: every seller of the same EAN sells through the same page. Good content therefore helps everyone on that page get found; the buy box decides who gets the sale. Since 1 April 2026 the details of the manufacturer and the responsible economic operator are mandatory; without those fields bol removes or blocks the listing.

One page per EAN

Every item on bol has an EAN (for books an ISBN). If a page for that EAN already exists, you attach your offer to it. If it does not, you create the page, and it has to be complete and correct. Two consequences:

  • If you sell an item others also sell, you share the page. You can propose content, but you are not the only owner.
  • If you sell your own brand or an item that is not yet on bol, you decide the quality of the page. That is where content makes the biggest difference.

Mandatory since 1 April 2026: manufacturer and economic operator

Since 1 April 2026 bol removes live products without information about the manufacturer or the responsible economic operator in the EU, and blocks new listings without those details. The background is the European General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), in force since 13 December 2024, which requires a responsible party in the EU to be known for every product.

In practice: make sure you have, per item, the name, address and a contact option of the manufacturer, and of the EU economic operator if the manufacturer is outside the EU. If you create listings via a feed or the API, send those fields along. If you import yourself, you are often that economic operator.

Title

The title is the most important text field for findability, within bol and in Google. A usable structure: brand, product type, distinguishing feature, size or contents. For example "Brand X thermos flask 750 ml stainless steel, cold for 24 hours". No list of keywords, no capitals to stand out, no "free shipping" in the title. bol has previously said in a content guideline that better titles, specifications and more images together can lead to about 20% more conversion.

Specifications

The attributes (colour, size, material, contents, compatibility) are the filters in bol's search results. An item without a colour filled in does not appear when a customer filters on colour. Fill in everything the category offers, even if it seems redundant. It is also the cheapest way to reduce returns: most returns with the reason "different from expected" go back to a missing specification.

Images

  • Main photo on a white background, the product fills the frame.
  • At least three extra photos: in use, detail, packaging or contents.
  • Dimensions in the image where size matters.
  • No text, logos or "sale" stickers in the photo; bol often rejects them and they do not work on mobile.

Description

A rule of thumb from general e-commerce SEO: 150 to 200 words of your own text, not the manufacturer text that also sits on ten other shops. Answer the questions a customer would otherwise ask: who is it for, what is in the box, what are the dimensions, what is the difference with the cheaper or more expensive variant. Every question you answer here is one customer question fewer, and customer questions count in your quality score since June 2026.

Findability and the buy box are two different things

This distinction is often confused:

FindabilityBuy box
What it decidesWhether and how high the product page appears in search resultsWhich seller on that page gets the sale
Who influences itEveryone who supplies content to the pageEach seller separately, through price, delivery and quality score
What you doTitle, specifications, images, descriptionTotal price, delivery promise, stock, score

A perfect product page on which a competitor has the buy box earns you nothing. Conversely, a buy box on a poor page sells poorly too. You need both, but they are separate lists with separate actions.

How you know it works

bol shows visits and conversion per item in the seller account. Measure before and after a content change over at least two weeks, and do not change the price at the same time. Start with the ten items with the most visitors and the lowest conversion: that is where the gap between what the page promises and what the customer buys is largest.

Checklist per item

  • EAN attached to the right existing page, or a new page created completely.
  • Manufacturer and EU economic operator filled in (mandatory since 1 April 2026).
  • Title: brand, type, feature, size or contents.
  • All attributes of the category filled in.
  • Main photo plus at least three extra photos.
  • Your own description that answers the three most asked questions.
