Short answer. The buy box is the "Add to basket" button on a bol.com product page. When several sellers offer the same item, one offer gets that spot: the offer bol considers best for the customer at that moment. The other offers sit one click away under "Other sellers" and sell far less there.

What bol looks at

bol names five factors:

  • Availability. The item has to be deliverable right away. No stock, no buy box.
  • Condition. New, refurbished, second-hand and returned items are weighed separately.
  • Price. The total price including shipping and VAT counts. According to bol, a €0.01 difference has no effect.
  • Delivery terms. Faster delivery and a later order cut-off make your offer better.
  • Quality score. Below a score of 65 you do not stand a chance.

The weighting differs per category. For everyday items fast delivery weighs heavily; for furniture the price usually decides. There is one winner at any moment: the buy box does not rotate between sellers.

Buy box and margin

It is tempting to lower the price every time you lose the buy box. That only works when price was the reason. If you lost it on delivery time or quality score, you give away margin and get nothing back.

So set a floor price per item: purchase, shipping, VAT and commission in, plus the minimum profit you want. You never go below it, not even for the buy box.

What you can do yourself

  1. Compare total prices. An item at €24.95 with €2.99 shipping competes with €27.94, not with €24.95.
  2. Sharpen your delivery promise when your price is already sharp. A later cut-off or Logistics via bol can do more than a lower price.
  3. Keep stock per EAN. Sold out means no buy box.
  4. Do not chase cents. Small steps help until you hold the buy box. After that they only cost margin.
  5. Watch your price stars. bol does not list them as a buy box factor, but they decide whether your offer is visible. See price stars.

Watching the buy box automatically

With a handful of items you can do this by hand. With hundreds you cannot: competitors change their prices several times a day. A bol repricer such as Offerboxer checks per item who holds the buy box and at what price, and adjusts your price within the floor and ceiling you set. New rules run in dry-run first, so you see what they would do before any price goes to bol.
